Are We Aware of Our Dilemma?

By: Jeremy | November 24th, 2008

Its not good news when your team is slowly dropping down in the standings with each passing week knowing that four likely ass whippings are on the horizon. If you cant get the needed points against teams like Malaga, then how do you expect to get them against better teams.

Like it or not, this team faces a real problem. After yesterdays 2-2 draw at home with Malaga, a team we beat at home just weeks earlier in the Copa, we gave up two points that we really needed to offset points we arent likely to get when we play the big four at the tail end of the schedule.

What I dont get is that Manzano and some of the players dont seem to be in a panic. Manzano is upset with the result and says we deserved to win and Josemi, playing against his old club, seemed happy with the result and believes the teams performance in this game is a sign of good things to come. I think they all need a wake up call. Sure we showed heart coming back from a goal down twice in this game, and probably had the better run of play, especially in the second half, but it is really the end result that matters. We needed the three points this week no matter how you look at it. Even if Keita got to play if only for 20 minutes, and other players looked pretty good, we now sit on 13 points, just four out of the relegation zone. Lets hope Adurizs knee problem causing him to be substituted for the second half is not a long term problem.

Not to be all negative, there is a little silver lining in the teams current situation. While it is sad that a team that finished so well last season now has to look at things in terms of surivival, this is our reality with so much turnover. There are three teams that seem to be emerging as favorites for relegation. Recreativo on 7 points and Osasuna on 8 points are just not that good. They need to fix some problems or they will be out of it before long. Athletic, a team any La Liga fan does not want to see relegated, needs to turn things around as well. With clubs like Numancia around, it isnt assumed that Athletic will be relegated, but these are teams that I think face more problems then we do at the current time.

We cannot continue to give away points like we did this weekend. While a couple of wins in a row can eliminate any crisis for a team in a tight La Liga, you cannot ask for it to come against the likes of Real Madrid and Barca. While we arent getting results in those games, other bottom dwellers can win two in a row because they might play Recreativo or Osasuna. This pushes us further down the table.

Hopefully the decision maker in management sees this problem and has some reinforcements lined up for the winter. What we need I dont know because when you can score two goals in a match you cant complain, unless you are giving up the same amount or more. Its the inconstency that is killing us. The sad thing is the replacements may not be any better talent wise then what we have now, but the current players dont mix with each other very well. They have had time to establish some consistency and these continued results indicate changes are necessary. If we think we are in a bad spot now, wait until the winter. The storm of tough matches is approaching and with results like a 2-2 draw at home against Malaga, we are failing to build the proper shelter to survive this fast approaching storm.
