Barcelona/Mallorca-The Hurricane is here

By: Jeremy | January 2nd, 2009

This is the time of year where Mallorca fans feel like a bunch of New Orleans residents who dont live in sturdy homes, who see the storm coming, can only watch as it hits land, and as the storm proceeds through town they realize they are on the wrong side of the eye. Once they decided to stay they just have to wait it out, hold on to what they can, and hope that if you are destroyed, that there is time to rebuild.

With our schedule and quitting not an option, the storm has hit and we are going to do our best to surivive it although smart money says we will be destroyed(in last place) and this happens because we failed to build a strong structure(weak early season performance put us near the bottom before we started this run of games). The only question is can we rebuild in time to surivive the hurricane that will return to close the season when the results will really be vital.

On a positive note, the first and maybe weakest part of the storm(Sevilla) hit us and we have not suffered major damage as of yet as we did manage to get a point after a boring 0-0 draw. This time the defense comes through and our offense does nothing. If you cant score a goal at home no matter who you are playing, then it is just another indication that your structure could topple at any minute. Any fan is happy with a point in that game, but that is only because the team is so weak. You need to win home matches when you hold the back well.

Now the bad side of the eye is approaching as we head to the Nou Camp for the ass whipping from Barca. As luck would have it I am not a fan of big clubs when it comes to soccer so my disdain for teams like Barca is obvious. I dislike Barca so much that when they play Real Madrid, I can root for Madrid. Madrid oozes class while Barca seems like a bunch of spoiled brats who think they are better then they are even though both teams opearte under the same financial parameters. I kind of see it as Barca is the Inter Milan of LaLiga as Madrid is the AC Milan. I would like Barca better if Johan Cruyff was still the coach. He is a god in my mind.

That being said, no one can deny how good this team is. They have not lost since opening game to Numancia and despite that shock defeat, they are 12 points up on Madrid and ten ahead of their nearest rivals. The are the most entertaining and by far best team the league has to offer and are my pick to win the Champions League. They have the great Messi, who I love to watch and also one of the least appreciated players in Samuel Etoo, who is a legend in Palma for what he did for us. Their second unit could beat most of LaLigas first teams. For all their greatness, they are like seeing your high school jerk with a big 7 series BMW. The car is way better then yours, but his parents bought it for him and if he wrecks it, he gets another without even a shrug. Im not impressed. A friend in high school with a big expensive car that he didnt earn isnt as offensive even though the respect he earns isnt because of his car.

Unfortunately we are just another small club in this big clubs path. If we had last years squad and they were in a little turmoil, maybe I could argue for points in this match. Unfortunately, they are humming on all cylinders while we are barely out of the garage with a bunch of new parts we cant seem to get together.

The draw in Sevilla put us back in seventeeth place but the bottom three clubs could all move ahead of us soon as Osasuna picked up three points last week and we are now only two points from the bottom. Despite a tie against a good team, its a bad week when your relegation rivals pick up points. Absent a miracle, we will have to check the damage after this game to see if we are totally smashed and that is before we see Madrid, Villarreal and then Valencia.

Is it too late to hammer any more boards up against our already fragile structure?

Bad analagies aside, what we really need to focus on now is the transfer window. Who are we going to bring in who can keep us out of the relegation zone with performances against similar clubs in the second half. With Moya injured and Lux not really that good, we got a good jump on the market with the addition of Depor goalie reject Dudu Aouate. With the problem we have in goal, its a good roll of the dice as this guy is decent if he can get along with his teammates. Maybe he is this years Marco Storari(Cagliari fans know what I am saying) so I wont bash what seems like a signing that wont matter that much. Atleast we seem to be ready to be active in the market.

We need transfer help in all positions so the new Chairman better be on the phone a bunch before the window closes. Our season is not determined by results at the Nou Camp however our prior performances in previous weeks, combined with Barca firing on all cylinders makes this a tough time to see them.

As usual, whenever you face a team that is clearly better then you are, you try and take the situation and make it positive. Manzano thinks that because Messi has been called back from vacation and Etoo is coming home early to play in this game, that they need a full strength side to beat us. Good try Greg. I would expect we will play 11 men behind the ball at all times to keep the damage to a minimum.

A goal for us in this game would be surprising, but if we dont atleast attack a little, this will be target practice for Barca and the amount of goals they score will not only send us closer to the bottom of the table, but will hurt our psyche even further. I would just suggest dont watch the game and focus on the transfer market. We are as undermanned as ever and its damn pathetic because these are the games you want to win and with some motivated talent, you can steal points against a big team that is overlooking you no matter how well they are playing. Not this year.

Prediction

Barcelona 4-0 Mallorca

I always respect those who have passion for the game and love their small. So I wish you the best after Saturday. And hope y’all stay in the top flight. But as for Madrid having class!? Are you serious! Those who believe evrything is solved by growing money at it? You can’t find Humbler football players than Xavi and Puyol and they are the embodyment of Barça.

    I agree 4-0
First goal 20th minute Eto’o. Don’t worry he won’t celebrate.

Jeremy, No doubt I think your judgments about Big teams class is not realistic rather it take the history nor the mission of the clubs in consideration and those are the backbones for any team class, but I agree with tomatutomate comment about fans of the clubs with less financial resources (so I don’t use the small/big classification because I don’t like it)

But what impressed me most is your writing skills, you have a very smooth style and thats a talent, beside using less “slang” expressions which makes reading easier for a guy who’s English is not his mother tongue – as you noticed already :) – I will make sure to keep following this page.

Wish you a happy new year away of relegation…

Real oozes classs? Barca spoiled brats? All you hear all season long from Barca players and the coach is humility and no overconfidence. They praise their rivals and never complain about the refs, yet Real is the team that oozed class? The same team that claim a conspiracy against them by referees. I’m sorry but you are off the mark with that assessment. Barca has UNICEF on their shirts and we don’t get paid for that, but we are spoiled brats? Where do you get this stuff, seriously? I’m sorry to say it but with statements like that, you are not qualified to write for the OFFSIDE luckily not that many people were interested in writing for Mallorca so you got the job. Well done.

jnice, I think you need to relax. It’s a blog so therefore he’s entitled to his personal opinion. I don’t agree with it either as I think Barca has a million times the class as Real does but everyones entitled to their own opinion.

I love when I state a personal opinion, i get personally insulted. Disagree all you want, but if an opinion does not qualify me to write for the Offside, then someone better claim my spot. Im humble enough to give it up.

John, that “your an idiot” comment is priceless.

Relax Jeremy, u wrote ur opinion and we wrote ours, no damage.
Why the hell do a team with limited finance buy a keeper when they have THAT Argentinian?!

I agree with Jeremy. No need to insult anyone. He doesn’t like our lads (Barca) which will color his comments. That’s okay. It’s his opinion. We can all disagree without telling someone that they are an idiot, or don’t deserve to be writing for The Offside. Last time I checked, this is a free and voluntary thing that we all do because we love our sides, right? So let’s all get along, and keep this thing fun.

Jeremy, your lads got hosed on that second goal. I still think that the ref thought it caromed off the defender, rather than Eto’o. Even still, Iniesta was off as well as Gudjohnsen.

But I do think that Manzano’s assertions that the ref cost you all the game are a bit of post-match heat. The Gods couldn’t have stopped Yaya from scoring that goal, which would have made it 2-1 instead of 3-1.

Hats off for a plucky, determined display.

Oh, and I will add, Jeremy, as regards your car analogy, that to be technically true, Barcelona sort of built their car. Xavi, Puyol, Messi, Iniesta and Valdes, all members of the starting XI, are products of the Barca system. Heck, we practically raised Messi.

Yes, we have a ton of money, which enables us to buy big talent. But we do so wisely. Henry was the only true big transfer money man on the pitch yesterday until Alves came on. Yaya and Abidal were modest purchases, as was Hleb. “Modest” in the big club transfer context to be sure.

Maybe you meant that about a certain white-clad team? :D

Now you are certainly correct in that the rich clubs play in numbers that the less-wealthy clubs can only dream of. Hleb, our 15 million bauble, would start for most clubs in the Liga, right?

I love it when the Barcelona fans get all up in a huff and puff and defend their club’s honor. No doubt, they have class and they have great home grown talent. But there’s two sides to the coin. As Kevin admitted their transfers are only modest in comparison to a team like Mallorca. And to bring in Henry, Keita, Hleb, Caceras, Pique (who was homegrown, but still had to be bought back), and of course, Dani Alves (for 30 million!) all in one transfer window is hardly a modest haul.

And as for the club’s class, let’s not forget that a year ago this time the locker room was in turmoil, it’s players were acting like truants, it’s president was taped slapping a fan in the cheek outside of a stadium, the fans were calling for everyone’s head, reducing their loyal coach to a pot smoking caricature and hurling insults at their own players outside the practice ground. All signs of true class, indeed.

And let’s also not forget that Barcelona fans claimed that no one deserved to win the league last year, petulantly denying the fact that Madrid and Villarreal deserved the victories they fought so hard for.

Now, and as always happens, the tables have turned and Madrid are acting the fool, while Barcelona, cool and confident for the moment, can afford the calm that precedes their ‘class.’

I’m not trying to embark on the whole Barcelona-Madrid comparison, but rather to point out that every team has it’s moment.

I hope your lot survive this term, Jeremy. I enjoy reading your posts; keep up the good work.

Late and may be a respond no one will read, but I only smile when a very educated Real Madrid Fan like you john try despiritly to make this “your class- our class” comparison. You dig as deep as suits you, thats smart because digging deeper make you drown, nice attempt, you know what you are doing and I respect that :)

And do i really need to respond to a real Madrid critic about Barcelona transfer spending? now thats not you John, u are much better protecting “that” club questionable image, picked the wrong topic my friend.

Class come from mission and history (two years back is not history). but one need to take in consideration that even those who write for small teams always have a big team to favor whether admit it or not, so no need to take things as seriously when its not considered as objective as promoted.I am sure the hint is well understood.

Ramzi – I specifically wish to avoid the “my club vs your club” comparison, knowing full well how fruitless that discussion would be. In fact, the point of my comment was intended to mean that values such as the comparative “class” of either team is impossible to gauge, especially between these two charged rivalries, and especially when it’s being argued by the clubs’ respective fans. We’re not going to see eye to eye on this matter, we’re not going to change each other’s minds, the only logical resolve is to just agree to disagree.

But what really gets me is when a fan of either such team, with such complicated histories that have been spun by the temporary influence of so many varied persons, with varied intentions and acumen, pretends as if – and please pardon the expression – “their shit don’t stink.” I pointed out the dubious above just as a reminder that each team suffers it’s embarrassments, and each team has spending power at it’s disposal that allow them to operate as no “small” club can afford to.

But Ramzi, lastly I want to thank you for your respect, and for acknowledging that as I point my finger I’m aware of my own team’s history, and am ashamed of much. That is the kind of humility I was raised on, to be aware of one’s own flaws before attempting to expose and decry those of others. I extend that respect to you as well.
