Espanyol-Mallorca

By: Jeremy | March 14th, 2009

Another week, another relegation game. Such is the life of a Mallorquinista when you have spent most of the season giving points away. Unlike the first half of the season where we put ourselves in a hole almost impossible to get out of, we have played better and contiune to steal points in boring but important 1-0 wins against relegation rivals. Slowly we have moved out of the relegation zone and are clearly in the pack of teams that could just as easily finish mid table as get relegated. While last weeks amazing comeback to get a point against Betis was much more exciting then in past weeks, it was still the loss of points that were needed to build the necessary cushion for safety before we hit the tough games.

This weekend we travel to Barcelona to face bottom level club Espanyol who are in serious trouble. They sit dead last and seven points behind us for a safe spot. They cannot lose this game. Knowing that, it will be a great achievement for Mallorca to get points this weekend. Espanyol, when motivated, can beat anyone. Unfortunately for them, other then a derby game against Barca, their motivation has been rare. However they now seem aware that the season is slipping away and the coach has made it clear they need to win.

Despite being three points clear of relegation, this is still almost a must win game for Mallorca and Manzano has made that clear. He knows that while the club has played great recently, it needs to be safe before the end of April to avoid having to beat some big teams to earn LaLiga football for next year. The team continues to respond and is clearly united if it can come back the way they did last week. With the pressures of the Copa now gone, the team can fully focus on the league which hopefully will lead to some more good results.

With both teams feeling motivation and confidence for different reasons, it really could go either way, but with Mallorcas record against bottom level teams, Espanyols motivation to keep their relegation rivals in sight, plus with them being at home, I think things point to a close victory for them.

Prediction

Espanyol 2-1 Mallorca
