Getafe-Mallorca

By: Jeremy | December 12th, 2008

Did anyone hear a big ground shaking thud in Palma last weekend and wondered what is was? That was our local team hitting rock bottom after an offseason that saw many changes and a new sesaon filled with bad results after brief moments of promise. I am really at a loss for words unlike last year where I could not wait to analyze the game, our upward movement in the standings, and our players who were in demand by bigger clubs because of their performance.

Its been hard for me to say much this year as I, like Manzano, am still trying to learn the new players, get a feel for who is doing what, and waiting while the team establishes an identity before its too late to plan for Segunda B. I feel no identity for this years team which says a lot because I always saw myself as a passionate fan since my first visit to Palma for a game almost 20 years ago.

It might be too late already for this team to turn it around. The game last week at home with bottom club Recreativo was must win and we gave the lead away twice only to lose allowing a relegation rival to pick up a surprise three points while we continued our free fall. This was the worst possible result and the players and Manzano can say all they want about the team being in a worse situation before and that they are united, but this is a team in panic and if you looked at the faces and ignored the words of the players and Manzano in the press conferences you would see how worried they truly are.

We still sit on 13 points which basically is now a relegation position even if we are technically in 17th. Recreativo moves closer to us and teams like Osasuna look poised to pass us. If you have any concerns about how long before we are in dead last, here are our next five games:

Getafe
Sevilla
Madrid
Barca
Villarreal
Valencia

Does anyone see points coming any time soon?

I dont think the result is as simple as getting rid of Manzano, which I would not do, or blaming the results on the politics of the front office. It certainly has not helped to be without Trejo and Moya but our players have simply failed to gel and have disappointed in their play. Soccer needs a team effort unless you have a Dani Guiza type player who can inspire others with his own performance.

Getafe does not lose at home and sits on 18 points safely in mid table. 5 points seem like it will be an eternity as it will likely be February before we see 18 points in our column. No matter what we have to play these games and this weekend will be one where we have as good a chance as any in the near future. I dont think they are that good, but at home facing a Mallorca team who is just utter garbage, they will expect three points.

Players often step up when they see panic and know that their survival is in trouble. The only positive is I see that in their eyes. The mountain is here so lets see if we can climb it. We will give a fight this weekend, but I just cant see any reason to think points are possible after last weekends debacle.

Prediction

Getafe 2-1 Mallorca
