Mallorca-Getafe
By: Jeremy | May 1st, 2009I know this is the big weekend in LaLiga because of El Classico, but lets not forget the smaller clubs, especially a club like Mallorca,who has pulled off what seems like a miracle to play yet another year in LaLiga. This year is shaping up to be much like last year in that the team has come together and has played like a european contender, but because of a poor start, such aspirations are out of the question. While this years team is not as good as last years, the talent has finally emerged and momentum has carried us to safety without needing wins against the big four in the final four weeks.
Last weekends win on the road against Recreativo was classic second half Mallorca. We played a team that faces the same concerns and issues we do and we beat them. As in previous weeks in the second half, we are taking points against teams we need to beat. We now sit in 9th place with 42 points, the number likely needed to survive, and wins like these put us safe rather then down where Recreativo is, fighting for their survival after giving away points at home to their relegation rivals.
We get one more of these games this weekend before we take the final four weeks to see if we are actually as good as our recent play has shown. Getafe comes limping in to Palma, one point above the bottom three. At home, we should win this match and it wont be Getafes performance that keeps us from doing it. If we decide to have a let up because we now feel safe, that is the only way Getafe gets points. They simply do not match up with us and being on the road will not help them.
While a letdown is possible Manzano should have the team ready to put on a show for the fans in the last clearly winnable home game this year. Keita should get more time and could be a decisive player in this game.
Other news that should motivate the team this weekend is the settlement of the Jonas Guitirrez transfer. We resolved that and pocketed an extra 3 mil or so that can be used to get some players but will also likely help with the financial issues the club faces since the sale of the club failed.
All and all its been another up and down year. We are going to have to do something to make the move up to european contender. While staying safe each year is great, we cant be content with that. We need to get to europe. While its out of the question this year, lets enjoy a final home weekend and see some great play before we challenge ourselves in a relaxed way in the next four weeks.
