Mallorca-Malaga

By: Jeremy | November 21st, 2008

Didnt we just play these guys? Pretty uneventful game where we won 2-0 at home to see us move on to the next round of the Copa. So in less then 2 weeks, we get them again at home in a vital La Liga game. As I mentioned in the last post, this is the first of four important games before we hit a stretch of ass whippings at the hands of bigger clubs.

To say this is a must win game is an understatement. As we slowly fall closer to the relegation zone while playing the weak portion of the schedule, we need to right the ship and quickly. A loss at home in this game will start to create a spiral that cannot be corrected. For as bad as things have been, there is still time to turn things around and get away from this talk of relegation.

The players talked about having a good week of practice and that they have recharged their batteries, but only the results will tell. Even if we comfortably beat an undermanned Malaga team at home in the Copa, we should still be able to beat them with their full team this weekend which should include Miguel Angel.

Malaga is similar to Mallorca. They are an up and down team who can put on a good performance one week and stink it up the next. Although they are two points above us in a very tight midtable, Mallorca is the better team. This should show itself at home and if we dont have confidence in this weeks game, a loss should eliminate confidence for the rest of the year. We should be very familiar with this team and this is where Manzano can show his coaching qualities by putting out the right combination of players.

I wonder who will line up offensively for Mallorca. Keita should be in there from the beginning. He needs a chance. I just dont understand how a team with Keita, Trejo, Aduriz, Arango, and Jurado cannot score more goals. Manzano continues to tinker with the lineup hoping something will click consistently. He is having no luck and I am unsure what lineup will be out there until you see it on the field.

I can only repeat myself so much. With the inconsistency of the play and the nature of the team to give away points, something needs to happen or we will be relegated. Its games like these that have to be used to stop the bleeding. Its a home match, against a team you just beat at home in the Copa, and you know that the tough games are coming. Points are a must.

Despite being in the mix for sixth spot with just about every other team in La Liga not in the top five, that goal is not a reality at this point. While a team can find a player or a combination that can turn around its season quickly, we dont seem to have found it yet. Therefore we need to win games like these instead of hoping for upsets in the games coming up in the final part of the first half of the season. I think we win this weekend only because we are at home, but our weaknesses will continue to be exposed.
