Mallorca-Racing Santander
By: Jeremy | February 21st, 2009Another week, another must win match as Mallorca must do something to not only escape the relegation zone, but to build a cushion of safety as we get closer to the big four the final four weeks of the season. Last weeks win over Numancia helped a bit, but the results must continue to come as the other bottom teams are going to looking to survive as well. If Espanyols win over Barca was any indication, we are very much a favorite for relegation. Teams that win games like they did today are the teams that find a way to survive. Most importantly, when a relegation rival wins a game against a big time team, it makes our successes that less meaningful and motivation is driven down.
Despite the Numancia win, our weaknesses cannot be ignored. On one hand it looks like its our defense that is the weakness as we have given up way too many goals, yet when our leading scorer, Aritz Aduriz, only has five goals, then the offense is also a big problem. Winning games 1-0 is not going to be a typical result and just another reminder how lucky we were last weekend. With Moya out, despite Aouate playing decently, the offense has to take charge and produce some results.
Racing is a solid midtable club and just finished their games with the big four earning four points. They are probably looking forward to this weekends game, even if it is against Mallorca on the road. Considering they gave us points on their home ground in the previous encounter, they also have added incentive to win. With Zigic back in the fold, they are a better team then they were earlier in the year.
Mallorca must win this home match. We cannot give up points to mid table teams if we are going to survive. Other then Moya, all the players are healthy and we should run out a full strength lineup. Last weekends win has to help morale, but the veteran players must keep the others motivated as wins are still needed.
The further the season progresses and the closer we remain to relegation, the easier it will be for things to implode. Last seasons great run is all but forgotten and with the financial issues starting to gain steam in the clubs mentality both on the field and in the front office, bad results will make the negatives rise up to where they cannot be controlled in time for the success needed to survive. Games like these go along way toward the goal of surivival. Despite being at home, and even coming off last weeks performance, there is still too much to worry about in this game. The end result will remind us that we are still in a lot of trouble.
