Mallorca-Sevilla

By: Jeremy | December 20th, 2008

As we head into Sundays game at the Ono Estadi against league power Sevilla, fans can look at things in a positive way as they certainly cant seem any worse, or they can look at it in a realistic yet hopeful manner as we now hit a run of five games that if any points at all are obtained, it will truly be a miracle.

For those of you who think the team is winless in its past seven games because of the problems of our President, there is some good news. Grande has resigned and the new President is Joaquin Garcia. Good time to take over there Joaquin. You have courage for sure as Grande decided to get out now rather to wait another month when we are in a worse position then we are now. New President or not, we still have the same players and still must face a tough team for five weeks straight.

Manzano continues his pattern of saying this weeks game is important and that the players are focused and united. Thats great, but its still the same united players who have not been winning for the past seven weeks. If we go the next five weeks without a win, we will be in last and it may be too late to save the season. I assume Hector Cuper is on speed dial in Palma.

Sevilla is the first of five matches for us against basically the five top teams in La Liga by far. Maybe Atletico Madrid is playing well, but Sevilla, Barca, Real Madrid, Villarreal, and then Valencia to begin the second half of the season is I guess soccers equivalent of Murderers Row. We only have 13 points before we played these teams. Ouch.

Sevilla comes in angry after a mid week loss to Serie A’s Sampdoria eliminating them from the UEFA Cup. Only needing a tie to go through to the last 32, they give up a goal and are now out of Europe. Serie A teams always seem to do better in these one off matches. Sevilla was the better team, but that Italian style will kill a Spanish teams European season so quickly. Yeah I know they can now concentrate on La Liga, but what good is doing well in La Liga if you cant make it into the last 32 of the UEFA Cup. Sevilla fans cannot be pleased although Mallorca fans would love to have their problems.

We do see the return of Mallorca favorite Fernando Navarro, who took the big money to go to a big club after being a big part of our great run last year. There is a nice local interview he did over at the team website www.rcdmallorca.es talking about this weekends game and his affection for Mallorca. Hes just the latest player we lost who loves us but isnt going to be playing for us so does it really matter. The woes of being a smaller club.

With a midweek game, Sevilla may choose to rest some players, but they have great depth and they will likely see if they can get a win against a bottom feeder team while hoping to give some of the stars a little rest either at the beginning or the end of the game depending on the flow. Either way, the midweek loss will only motivate this team to do well so they wont be coming in not caring because they moved on in Europe. The opposite result has made us possible lambs for slaughter rather then getting a full tiger who would rather rest on its latest kill allowing us some surprise points.

Mallorcas problems are still the same. Impatient fans, a group of players who claim to be united and say all the right things off the field, but still a bunch who cannot do well together on it. Not having Moya and Trejo does not help, and with Cleber and Castro nursing injuries, the lineup Sunday is anyones guess. If they fall behind, despite the players request for patience and support from the fans, the boobirds will turn a 1-0 game into a 3-0 game real quick. If we do not score first, we cannot get points in this match.

For the past few weeks, which have included some games at home against beatable opponents, fans have been waiting for that win that might turn things around. It never happened. Now we hit the tough part of the schedule already in the relegation zone. New President or not, you cant expect a team on such a bad streak to start performing against the likes of Sevilla et al. If the new President has the power to bring in new players, then he is going to show his worth real quick, because as much as I try to like some of the new guys, something is missing and President Garcia is going to have to try something even if he can only replace guys with new players with similar talent. I still dont think Manzano is the problem as sometimes so many new players makes a tough situation impossible. The tough situation is only going to get tougher after this weekend unfortunately.

Prediction
Mallorca 1-3 Sevilla
