Mallorca-Sporting Gijon
By: Jeremy | October 4th, 2008Considering the uncertainty that surrounded the beginning of the season, Mallorca and its fans have to be happy with the teams start and current position in the standings. While Manzano seems to think the team is going to finish in the top seven, I think a mid table finish with all the changes would be remarkable. So far Mallorca has done what it has needed to do to finish mid table and who knows, Manzanos thought of a top seven finish may not be so outreageous.
Mallorca for the most part has gotten the results they would expect if they are going to finish higher in the standings then most would predict. The surprising win on the road against Racing and the draw on the road to Deportivo made up for the lackluster draw to Osasuna at home. With a tougher part of the schedule coming up, a must three points is necessary against Sporting this weekend.
Sporting is a well known Spanish team with a great history who returned to the top flight this year with some renewed expectations, but instead has started off with five losses to begin the year. Mallorca does not want to be the first team to give up points to Sporting, especially at home. A win continues to give Manzanos revamped team a move up the standings while a loss will show that the team still has work to do. This is the kind of game you like on one hand because you get a team that is at its low point yet a loss would hurt more then any other loss.
Sporting is going to attack and make this a great game to watch. They will not hold anything back and will feel this is a game to get points as Mallorca in their mind is having more success then they should and are really a team on their level. Mallorca will look to counter attack with Arango feeding Aduriz for a goal or maybe two and Webo may even see some late action and produce a goal.
Mallorca simply has too much talent and momentum to lose this home game. Manzano has proven his talent as a coach and with his teams confidence, they will continue to win the games they are supposed to win. The real measure for Mallorcas talent and position in La Liga this year will be measured by games in the future against teams who are expected to push for european qualification. They will not overlook this game and should win a wide open thriller. Right now, I am an upbeat and confident Mallorca fan.
Prediction
Mallorca 3-1 Sporting Gijon
