Time to Panic?

By: Jeremy | December 17th, 2008

I know there arent a ton of Mallorca fans out there and very few who read this blog, but it is important that this site have all teams represented even if the discussions or analysis is brief and not as indepth as some of the other teams.

That being said, when your team is not doing well and sinks closer to the bottom of the league with each passing week, it is hard to look for positives, especially when your team should be better then it has shown.

After last weekends 4-1 loss at Getafe, we have now gone seven games without a win. It seemed like just yesterday we were eyeing that final UEFA Cup spot and were going to be in the mix for a respectable finish despite a huge influx of new players. Alas, we have fallen apart and the players are pretty aware of their situation even if they are still trying to say the right things and show support for Manzano and President Grande who is having his own off the field issues.

Getafe was just like all the other matches. Down 2-0 pretty quickly, even with a goal scored by Aduriz to make it 2-1 just before halftime, which indicates the team didnt want to quit, after a strong start by the team to open the second half, Getafe gets a third on the counter and from there it didnt matter that they got the fourth goal just before the end. Its still a loss.

The team seems to think they are having a bad run of luck. Bad luck is a typically a single incident like a bad call or last minute fluke goal, but its not luck when it becomes a pattern. The games we play all end up the same and we are now in a relegation position with the toughest games of the first half to go.

We get Sevilla this weekend at home who does play a midweek UEFA Match. Sometimes that helps as they wont be focused on the game with Mallorca but their talent is clearly superior so even on the road it should not matter. With Barca, Real Madrid, and Villarreal to follow, we should be in last place here soon.

At this point all we can do is support the team. If the players arent talented enough to compete or they do not work well together, then management must look at changes. Is it the talent? Is it the coaches inability to bring the players together or maximize the talent? I do not know but something has to be done because too much time has passed to allow this slide to continue much into the second half.

you r right. it seems like nothing is going our way at the moment. and with the fixture list it doesnt look like things will turn around soon. I think we need some quality signings because we let a lot of people go in the summer and didnt adequately replace them. Let me know who you think we should try for. Thanks for writing

If the other teams have some bad streak too then maybe it will make it easier to avoid relegation. I think it might be too soon to give up.

I always cheer for the underdog. :)

yes..id prefer to do just one team, but when i found out no one was doing any posting for Mallorca, my team in Spain, I wanted to get involved and post something, even if is just on occasion and not that much indepth. Every team in La Liga should have someone posting something semi regularly atleast.

I am sure doing two teams probably makes both of my blogs a little inferior, but since my teams arent that popular, hopefully less people notice.

Jeremy, even though I don’t post here, I actually read all your blogs. Ever since I visited Mallorca two summers ago and saw them demolish Betis 2-0, I’ve grown a soft spot for them and like to see them do well (after Sevilla of course). Your blogs are short yes, but the important info is still there, quality over quantity, many blogs go on and on with a bunch of useless information, and quite frankly no one wants to read that much, so what you’re doing is good.

Good work on the blogging, keep it up, it’s nice to see some of the smaller less known La Liga teams have a voice.

Man, haha, you just like the islanders that are fighting against relegation, don’t you.

Ditto to Anthony’s. Quality is fine, great work keeping up blogs for some of the smaller teams.

Jeremy, if you get this message sometime on Saturday afternoon, drop me a line at emsc25@gmail.com and maybe we can do a joint blog for Sunday’s game. I have a few questions lined up for you and hopefully we can do something.

Wow, glad to have some comments. Its funny how I spend a summer in Mallorca and end up spending time in Sardinia also once I find out my grandma was from Sassari. Being a fan of island relegation teams is tough, but that was my first taste of European football so I just stayed a fan of the clubs I saw. They werent even top level teams when I saw the games so its good to see them in the top flight if even it is a year to year thing.

Anthony I emailed you. Glad to have you involved. All teams should have a fan post something so maybe we can build this blog up and not get relegated.

PS..lets hope we can get lucky and beat your boys from Sevilla(a beautiful Spanish town by the way). They are either mad or tired after the tough midweek game. I dont see us winning but who knows.

Geremy dont panic look on the bright side del boy (davidson)could now be in control the club would no longer be playing, Freddy Shepherd could be the saviour he’s a football man has money to spend on the club not to fill grandy’s pockets again. When the background fiascal has stablised then the boys on the playing field will do their bit so wait and see dont panic.
