Where do we go from here?
By: Jeremy | May 4th, 2009Mallorca completed its dramatic turnaround from likely relegation fodder to safety and ninth place in La Liga with a 2-1 win at home to Getafe. Jurado, who we need to somehow pry away from Atletico, scored first, then Navarro gave an own goal to Getafe, and after a bad goal kick, Aduriz scored the winner in minute 68. This was a typical Mallorca win as there was nothing spectacular, but just enough was done to get the three points.
We now sit on 45 points, clearly safe for next year, too far away to challenge for Europe, and we now head into the final four weeks against Sevilla, Barca, Real Madrid, and Villarreal. While the schedule makers set it up to have everyone play the big four in successive weeks, we probably ended up lucky to get this run of games at the end of the year. It has allowed us time to right a sinking ship against similar type clubs, most of which were reeling as they came into the game with us after their own big four run had just finished. Overall we lucked out on the schedule which we needed as this was a team searching for an identity after the massive turnover from last years great team.
So what do we do now. These next four games are meanningless so I would hope to see some younger players get a chance to play in consecutive matches. Is Keita a La Liga quality striker? Is Castellon a player with a future at our club? Where is Trejo? These are just a couple of questions we need to answer as we now must focus on what we do in the offseason not only to improve but to prevent the massive turnover of players that allow for a team to start off so badly.
With the extra money from the Guitierrez matter now available, we must focus on keeping Arango, Adruiz, Trejo, and even Moya. We must somehow find a way to make Jurados loan from Atletico permanent even if they would be stupid for not bringing him back to their team. We must also prevent other lesser known players from leaving, especially like Castro who is vital to this club. If we can keep this core group together, any new additions brought in will allow us to have a solid start to the season. There is no reason why this team should not finish in 6th to 8th every year with an unexpected emerging player maybe pushing us higher. The constant battle for funds, the ownership uncertainty, and the exodus of players are a constant battle for a team like Mallorca, but at some point we have to take the next step forward.
Celebrating another year in LaLiga is certainly something we should do as 13 straight years in the top flight is a great achievement for the club, but as we establish ourselves, we need to aim higher and learn from this year that continuity is key. We have plenty to do in the offseason, but for now, lets enjoy the last four games and see if the team can play spoiler.

Great result Jeremy. If you guys could have produced this form consistently throughout the year then I could have definitely seen you guys in Europe next year. Hopefully you will be able to attract a bit more talent to the club in the summer and push towards those Europa League spots next season.

If anything, Mallorca learned this year that it is as much about keeping the talent you have as getting new talent in. We were going to lose the guys from last year. Not much could be done. But we need to be able to keep Aduriz, Arango, Trejo, Moya, Castro, Navarro, and even Santana. We must also find a way to buy Jurado outright from Atletico. If we lose too many of these guys, no matter what talent comes back in place, next year will be like this year, but we may not be so lucky to survive. There is too much turnover at this club for us ever to be anything more then mid table at this point which is a shame because some great players have come through Palma.
